RX7what's 95 LS2 build thread
« on: January 31, 2011, 07:55:35 PM »
I had a build thread on the last forum and Was just at the point of getting my car running when it went down and i lost my thread. I have been planning on a new build thread and now that the car is 99% done, here it is

For a long time I have bought, sold and parted out third gen RX7's. I think I have owned around 14 so far. So I was constantly on the forums and for sale sites looking for good FD's. This car came up on in a for sale on a Friday and that night I was driving it home. Several people were trying to buy the car and put deposits on the car to hold it for them in the few short hours it was for sale. I was simply at the right place at the right time.

Here it is. A 1995 number 496 of 499 built that year. Sitting on a set of 99spec wheels. 70k miles.

And here's the engine bay.

The car set exactly the way I bought it for a couple years. Occasionally driven on the weekends, until it was time for the swap.

Engine sourced from a 2006 GTO LS2 with 35k miles.

JTR 1 7/8 header were the very first part to show up. Their shipping was exceptionally fast.

All Samberg mounts including (but not pictured) cobra cradle.

Sub frame powder coated and installed.

Build Date on the car 12/95. It has the series two stuff on it like this 96-99 second gen ABS system.

Have to go back to work Ill up date some more tonight.

At this point a bunch of random parts started showing up in the mail.

Tri-ax handle. Remote bleed line for clutch slave.

Corvette engine stands and clutch line.

Fidanza light weight LS2 flywheel.

Upgraded axle kit for the cobra rear, from the drive shaft shop. These were the best they made at the time. With the upgraded Porsche style inners.

Then the engine arrived.

I like my engine bays to be very clean. so I removed all unused wires and relays from the car. The relays and box's that need to stay were relocated under the bumper and under the driver side head light.

LS7 clutch on LS2 aluminum Fidanza flywheel.

stripped out the interior

Dropped in the LS2 for the first time :) As you can see the engine bay is getting much cleaner already.

I had a VERY nice black carpet waiting for this car I saved from a 12K mile 94 I parted out a few years ago.

Rotary Extreme rear strut bar with harness rear parcel tray attachment points.

Carbon door sills.

Little closer to done.

Samberg rad kit.

JDM Recaro RZ seats.

Aluminum drive shaft

Wilwood 7/8 just like everyone else.

Tranny from another 06 GTO with 14k miles on it. Clutch slave was replaced with brand new unit as this one had a small crack in it.

I'm sure the rotary die hards hate you more than most.  Like CYM owners who convert.

Here's all the fittings I used in my fuel system. I ordered them all from summit. Hope the part number help a few people out.

Engine bay mostly complete. Needed a different length intake hose, power steering line and a bit of clean up.

And a start up vid. (please excuse the mess)

Picked up a nice set of discontinued Volk SE37K's.

And started putting the car back together

Putting this thread together has made me realize that I didn't take nearly enough pictures. I have no pictures of the cobra rear end or many other steps. I have been driving the car for several months now and it has been almost flawless other than a few nuts and bolts that needed to be tightened.

It's a stock LS7 clutch. It feels like a stock clutch in a Honda civic. I have to be honest. I have had these cars with light weight flywheels and not. I can't really notice the difference. It's suposed to rev quicker but it's not really noticeable. I will still buy a light weight flywheel for every one of these cars I build.

Yeah that's exactly what I'm running. I think it should be good to around 500whp.

is this a lie??....

EDIT:  I just noticed in your pics of the flywheel....you have an LS2 Vette flywheel....thats why it works with the LS7 clutch....
