My '69 Chevelle turbo 5.3 build pics
« on: December 02, 2013, 09:58:23 PM »
My good buddy Chris Coffey in Nashville, TN at Coffey Fabrication and Race Prep is putting together this car for me as a shop build and to show his vast skills in building street/race cars. He is doing the cage, turbo setup, trans mount, and fuel/cooling systems.

Doing swing out door bars but need to buy seats for it 1st.  Below the rear package tray is a crossbar in the trunk to connect the two rear down bars.  In that trunk area I want to put a 5 gallon water cell for the intercooler.

This is a full 8.50 legal chromemoly cage.  Motor is an alum 5.3 with ported heads, baby 225/223 cam, LS6 intake, billet wheel GTS76 turbo,  a/w intercooler, a/c, p/s, Ford 9" with 35 spline axles/3.25 gears, T56 Magnum, McLeod twin disc.  Goal is a fast street car that can be driven anywhere, get 20mpg+ highway, and runs 9's :)

Next up is the hot/cold side for the turbo.  Intercooler most likely is going on the passenger side up high by the firewall.

The last picture is his chassis table for building frames.  He likes the top speed stuff at Bonneville and has built a few insane cars for that type of racing.

Nice setup Mark, especially since I don't see too many Chevelle's rockin caged turbo LS3's. Nice connecting rod tat on your builder.

Nice connecting rod tat on your builder.

I know an engine builder who has an old school Hemi connecting rod tattoo on the back of his neck. Needless to say, he's rather passionate about old school Chrysler engines lol.

Looking forward to seeing this build Mark.

Turbo hot side parts arrived this week.  Holley a/c bracket and Sanden  compressor en route.
Hopefully some work starts on it next week.

A few of the car when I bought it.  2 owners, California only car, 93K original miles, stored in a guys garage the last 10 years as a father/son project that never completed itself.  Had an iron 5.3 with 4L60E in it that didn't run with 10 bolt non posi.

The only rust spot on entire car was the sail panel below the rear window.  That was professionally replaced/fixed.

Last shot is Chris towing it from SF Bay Area to TN!  He had an empty trailer and said he wanted to build up the Chevelle.  After trying a few local fabricators the only one I trust and AFFORD is Chris.  He does it right the 1st time and runs circles around people as far as time to complete the work/billable hours.  I said go for it.... or it'll collect cobwebs here ;)

SWEET!!!!!!!!!!!!!  A/C in that beast!!!!

Very curious about ...

Trans choice?

Cage for a street car, guess you will be in harnesses all the time to keep your head off the bars?  Any passenger seats?

Why A/W over FMIC, assuming ice?

And isn't it nice to have room in the engine compartment!

Jel ass. I love chevelle's. When I think old school muscle car I think chevelle.

I hate to admit I'd do a dirty, stinky, old, underpowered by today's standard, leaky big block if I ever did one though hahaha.

I still like the turbo LS setup though. As long as its fast when its done :drive:.

I had the Chiseled Performance A/W intercooler for a couple years and finally found something to put it in so that's why I'm running it.  It is most likely going to be placed against the firewall on the passenger side in the engine bay.  The cooler is huge.

Trans is a T56 Magnum 6spd.  McLeod street twin clutch (rated at over 1200 ft/lbs)
I want to run 9's with the manual trans....  I'm thinking it will.

Then put in an automatic and run some 8's eventually.  The tracks around here are pretty strict so I needed a full cage to not get the boot.  It'll have back seats and I'm putting in e39 M5 front seats.  I don't need to go faster than 8.50's... probably ever.

Custom BTR 33x19x4 3 core dual pass radiator.  No cooling issues to worry about ever now.
https://www.bricethomasradiator.com/

Over 12" of clearance to the front of engine.  Plan to run a Lincoln MKVIII 18" e-fan rated at 5500cfm.

Chris is welding on the inlet/outlets to his specs.
