fastest RX-7 running Explorer 8.8" IRS diff?
« on: October 22, 2015, 12:20:09 AM »
I'm curious what the fastest car in the 1/4 is running with the Ronin Explorer 8.8" IRS diff?  FC or FD?

I know of 2 FD's that have gone low 9's with the Cobra 8.8" IRS style.
I know that a couple FC's with stock T2 rear diffs and SBC/SBF with nitrous did low 9's too (9.30's I think)!

I don't think we know.  There are several turbo cars in the 800-1000 whp range but we don't always ask know who's running what.  Anyone want to stake a claim to the title?

I know the explorer dual front mounts are massive compared to cobra and I much prefer our load path vs. other designs, but it's hard to say where limits really exist.  At some speed cars become pure drag machines and when that happens there's no beating a solid axle for keeping the tires pointing up and down.
LS2 stroker FC, Mandeville big brakes, widebody, etc

Sweet baby Jesus! that things shits and gets!

club_xcursion and I are both running the explorer diff w/ a 3.55 gear but not sure that either one has enough power to really push  the limits. He has trapped 132 w/ a 1.7 60' and I haven't gotten a chance to run with all this damn rain. As the season goes on I'll report back.

How fiddly is it to get this kit aligned right for welding? I'm toying with buying this and doing it myself. But...

I found it quite easy.  I don't have a welder, so I did spend a little extra time double checking and marking.  eventually locked it all in place with clamps, removed the subframe and carried it off to be welded.  It came back and went in perfectly.  So, IMO, even doing it my way the kit was still pretty easy to do.  If you have a welder - piece of cake....
