Comp Air cooled turbos - no oil or coolant lines
« on: August 03, 2021, 11:11:55 AM »
Anyone have any experience with these?  They seem like a game changer for remote mount turbos, no scavenge pumps, and coolant lines needed.

I am quoting one now for my twin charged snowmobile project where the packaging and weight savings from no lines will be a huge benefit.

If they are around $1400 each it would make for a nitrous like price to install at the rear muffler and run a cold side up to engine.  Keep your LT headers, heat out of the bay, and a very simple install.

Not sure on long term reliability yet.  You do have to grease it every 3000 miles with special $200 grease (not sure how long it lasts..) Might be the down side for some.

I've never been a fan of remote mount. FAR too laggy. I'd also be concerned about longevity. Sealed bearing with that kind of heat doesn't seem ideal.

Price came back at $2100 for lightweight SS turbine housing, and 3" v bands on both sides which is what fits my sled.

I think if you properly designed a rear mount it can work, STS proved that.  I think the combo would have to be a strong NA engine (torquer cam) and power curve that you sprinkle in 5-10lbs of boost and some meth spray to just add the to curve up top.  Treating it just like nitrous

I agree if you want a boosted motor with big boost that you are relaying on to make up for soft compression and timing it would be a laggy b***.

I might have to try it on the sled.  I put about 1000 miles on it a year so once a year grease would be easy for me.

On a sled it would be far more viable. Not nearly as long an exhaust/charge run.

in the 350z/370z world they have been using them for a long time, some guys daily on them and put tens of thousands of miles on them. I was skeptical on them at first too, but technology really has come a long way and they seem to stand the test of time...

Just a FYI I did buy one, and will be getting it on the sled before the end of the year.  I am loving the idea of no lines, but lets see how it holds up.

Don't they need servicing/rebuilding every 15000 miles or so?

Turbo is amazing and works great!  This opens up a lot of options for mounting for sure!  Make sure you can grease it is about the only requirement.  My sled has some unrelated issues so my experience is low miles.  I haven't and may never get to the 15K mile rebuild.  I think its actually more like 50K miles.  Just grease it when you do your oil change as maintenance.  I am also going to air duct some flow to the center cartridge just to make myself feel better.    Really really cool product!

I’m running two of them and love it. No issues so far. Trying to think back to my research ast winter— the technology has been around since about 2012.. these new comp turbos have about 4 years in development. Zerk fittings can be in any orientation. Yes you can run different grease but why? Use what they recommend. My last journal bearing setup recommended rebuild after 20-30k miles.. if I can get that out of them I’m okay with that. Did some decent pulls in them- pulled the intake no play- nice and tight center shaft.

Hey guys, any new updates on these turbos?  I was going to reach out to Comp and see what options they had that would be similar to a VIS New gen 78 (what I currently run).

Zero issues for me, lack of snow prevented some better testing this year but so far I am impressed and will be using more of these someday.  If it was going to be for a daily I think I would do more oil based one though, just because the greasing can be a tiny bit annoying vs on a daily I would want to set it and forget it type of thing.  Just personal opinion and if you don't mind greasing it I wouldn't hesitate to do it.

Yea I hear ya on that.  Its still intriguing to mount nice, low, and out of the way.
