Over the radiator intake for FC using Factory GM Air Bridge
« on: October 13, 2012, 06:26:08 PM »
I have been wanting to do something like this for some time. Joel's write up in his build thread was my inspiration and the general directions for my install follow the steps he lays out. Further inspiration is the write-up on the Flyin Miata website showing how to put a late model Z06 induction system in a Miata.

Sooooo, I started looking around ebay for parts. I found a 2012 LS3 Corvette take-off for $49 + shipping. Hmmmm.[attachimg=1]

Turns out this is the same as the LS7 set-up with the addition of a resonator box on the side to reduce induction noise. I bought it  :).

Here is the before picture.

And the after.

It is a very tight fit. In the picture above I hadn't finished making covers to go over the space on either side of the air bridge. The differences from Joel's write-up are:
I had to trim the forward edge of the core support a bit.
I had to remove inner hood material down to only the outer skin in the area over the air bridge.
I sawed to resonator off and plugged the hole with a circle cut out of it a SA glued on.

I already had hood struts and my '86 had the coolant tank at the left inner fender location. I took an easier route to relocate the relays.

The air bridge takes a card style MAF/IAT combo. I went to a local yard and got a MAF and pigtail for $20. The largest single expense is the Aerocatch hood latches, can't find them cheap. It came with the filter...a Donaldson "powercore". The change interval on them is 50k miles and they are low restriction. Needed to adjust the MAF tables as they are completely different than the F-Body style. A 4" x 4.25" silicone reducer fits perfect between the oval filter outlet and a 4" aluminum transition tube.

Awesome.  You'd be surprised how much power that's worth... once you get it retuned you should be able to easily tell the difference just from seat of the pants feel.

unless you own a turbo ls9 rx7 you do not know what the fuck you are talking about.

Nice work Steve! This looks like a great solution for those that don't want to reconfigure their radiator.

Great mod Steve.  I was afraid to ask about the MAF  That really cleans things up and makes the price of that intake a real deal.  You are becoming the master of carving up hoods

Also, where are you running your IAT sensor?

The card style MAF has a built in IAT sensor.

Looks awesome Steve! If I just didn't spend 200 bucks on the one I'm running how I would be all over that. It really cleans up the front end of the car. So when are you doing to get a fast and Throttle body?

I have one of these on my car as well.

I ended up with very similar hood cutting and notching of the core support.

I found a big hump connector at a Freightliner repair shop that I think I am going to use but the hump part may touch the hood so I may go with a sleeve setup like yours.

A hump looks like it will touch the hood. I went with a sleeve.

I'll post a pic of my setup later when I get home.  I've been running an ls7 airbridge for a while now and just made some minor changes.

You can get a plug and play harness adapter for about $25 IIRC to plug in the 5 wire MAF.  Also for those looking at these, the LS7 bridge doesn't have an intake silencer, and you can get both versions from LG Motorsports for $20 with filter!

The butt dyno says yeah.

I found the connector with pigtail walking a junkyard. Lots of GM products use the connector. I think the one I found was on a 2004 Yukon.  LG Motorsports for $20 is a great deal. One man's trash, etc.

I just traded the sleave out for a real GM bellows to give me some more vibration isolation and can feel the difference. It does touch the hood slightly...but it is not the only thing  ;).

No FAST for me Jeff. I'm fast enough.
