well shit there you go.
every other pcm ive ever encountered has had to be grounded by the pcm body!
sorry for the bad advice
Yes, check all of that, but NO! do not ground the PCM. All car manufacturers mount their PCMs on plastic or other nonconductive material for a reason. Yes, the chassis of the PCM is grounded, but it is through the engine harness. If you loose your engine ground and your PCM is also grounded, EVERY engine circuit will try to get it's ground through your PCM and you'll be shopping for a new computer. Ask me how I know.

Blake,do you mean a code scanner? Do I need my obd 2 plug for that? If yes I don't have it
yet.I will check the power to the coils and such when I get some help.
Thanks

Yes, a code scanner. You would need an OBDII plug for that.

You need to get a scanner on it and see if the PCM talks. That will tell you if it's alive and wired correctly.
Easiest way I can think of anyhow, but as I have a scanner, I'm heavily reliant on it for diagnostics.

so much to learn with one too... but knowing what your looking at with one if only 1/2 the battle

Very true. But once you can use one, it's amazing that a few sensors can tell you a massive amount of information about what the engine is doing.
My main love for logging data is that my very, very sensitive ass/ears pick up every little tick, knock and "off" feeling in the car, and it's nice to have the scanner to sanity check... me.

oh i hear you there.. much more so on my end when im driving someone else stuff and beating on it..lol.. but i can set my tuner in the passenger seat and just drive.. he can watch the wideband and all that. even more so nice on a loading dyno...when im having a issue on the road, i can 95% of the time get it to do it on the eddy current dyno too. makes life much easier..lol

When I bought my swap, the guy gave me a hypertech programer.how can I use this? I know on the box itself it says you can change certain things on your pcm,is this used as a scanner as well?
I will be going to the junkyard and getting a obd 2 port. What year of GM is ideal? 1996 and up right?

Yeah, that should work to verify communication can be established with the PCM.
And yes, any 1996 up car should be fine.

thanks

I can't remember if this has been covered, and I'm too busy to look, but is your crank sensor plugged in? 12v at injectors and coil packs?

Well, as a pretty solid rule, if the PCM is alive enough to talk, it works. It's very rare for them to fail partially.
You have something that's messed up in the wiring. Are you getting fuel?

yes, there fuel, the fuel gets to the rails and then just stops.do you think the wiring at the IGN is messed up? im about to go check that.
thanks
