Reiketsukan's Update Thread

Welcome, ladies and gentlemen, to the chronological record of my progress with my 1986 LSx-swapped RX7. Being a student, my progress will be slow, but I plan on doing my best with what I've got to work with. I'm writing this for my own reference, but please don't be afraid to add your own comments or factual recommendations.

ALL PICS / UPDATES ARE IN THE FIRST POST

Here she is the day I brought her home!

Looking good! No rust, no dents, and freshly painted, although it was an odd job. It's kind of a 'matte finish' paint job, but it's growing on me. My friends call it "The Fridge".

Known modifications:
'99 5.3L with about 70k miles
'98 Firebird PCM
Stock ls1 intake, cam, injectors, and exhaust manifolds
2 1/4 crush-bent dual exhaust
Turbo 350 trans w/ stock converter
Ford 8.8 IRS rear differential with 3.23 gears and LSD
5-lug swap
SVT Cobra wheels

Unknown modifications:
Aftermarket shocks and lowering springs. (stiff as hell!)

Needed a bit of aesthetic work...

Weird intake pipe replaced with some nice pieces from siliconeintakes.com
Unknown twin fan setup replaced with a taurus fan
3-piece radiator hose replaced with an aluminum pipe and silicone couplers
Heater core capped off, hoses removed, looped the heater core inlet/outlet on the water pump
Radiator plate replaced with simple radiator tie-downs.

-UPDATE-  10/13/11

I've accumulated some new parts to put on during the Fall / Winter

New alternator, corvette lower alt mounting bracket, serpentine belt, tentioner and pulley

New 3.73 gears for my Ford 8.8 IRS

GM factory fresh '02+Z06 cam and springs from GM Parts Direct

TCI Streetfighter 3,000rpm stall converter w/anti-ballooning plate for my TH350

A buddy of mine unlocked my PCM with HPTuners. Once the new cam and everything is installed, he'll tune it up real nice for me!

-UPDATE- 11/24/11

Got the trans pulled and upgraded a few things!

Transgo shift kit and governor re-calibration kit installed!

It's almost a shame you won't be able to see it.

Quite a comparison! Check out how huge the old stock one is.

-UPDATE- 11/26/11

'04 Z06 cam and springs installed!

Test fit of my new alternator and serpentine belt setup.

Picked up a 2.5" mandrel bent exhaust kit from Summit. Four 4' straight pipes, four 45 bends, four 90 bends, and four 180 bends. I plan on fabbing-up a true dual setup with either an 'H' or 'X' crossover.

The new exhaust will get a pair of Thrush Welded mufflers with 2.5" inlets and outlets to keep sounds somewhat under control.

-UPDATE-  3/8/12

I nabbed a B&M Hi-Tek SuperCooler to keep my trans nice and frosty, and an Aeromotive Stealth pump to replace my Montero pump my car came with.

New Aeromotive Stealth pump going in.

-UPDATE-  3/26/12

Dropped the 8.8 IRS Diff.

Opened up and emptied out.

Old 3.27 gears in the background.

New 3.73 gears, all new bearings, seals, etc back in. Rebuilt by Jason @ Leadfoot Racing

Re-installed and ready to rock!

We fabbed up some down pipes and took it for a quick 20-min drive to break in the new ring and pinion. We'll see if we got the governor re-calibrated for 6k WOT shifts this weekend, then we'll build the rest of the exhaust and start tuning on HPTuners. More pics coming soon!

Turbo 350 trans (No overdrive... Boo...)

I think this will be nice to detailed it to your preference since it already has a lot of stuff done to it. One thing I wanted to add is that since you're not happy not having an overdrive - you really going to hate this with 4.10 gears.

With 4.10 gears and a 1.00 third gear you'll be driving at 66 mph at 3500 rpm

Oh, I know. I plan to switch over to a 4L60E before too long. A friend of mine said he'd give me one he has laying around, then I'll have him rebuild it before I put it in. I wish I could do it all at once, but I can only get so much cash at once.
*(I eventually decided against both the 4.10's and the 4L60E. lol)

Did you have to have a special flexplate for  5.3L to TH350 ?
I'm building a turbo set up and will be using a th350 behind my 5.3

Looks great dude! I really like those wheels too.

Only one complaint, it looks like you downgraded on the radiator mounts.

Thanks man! I believe you would think differently about the rad mounts had you seen first one in person. You may not be able to tell by the pic, but the mount that came with the car looked like it was bent by hand over the side of a work bench, then trimmed with a set of hand sheers by an eight year old. It also (barely) held on the lop-sided double fan setup that looks like someone 'modified' with a hack saw to make it fit. The whole cooling setup was loose-fitting, asymmetrical, and embarrassing. That and the nasty intake piping were the first things to go.

If I remember right, it just has a stock 5.3 flex plate flipped so the 'dished' side is facing the trans, then there's a spacer on the trans side to let the stock length bolts work. Might want to double check that, though. It's a pretty common setup.

Stock flexplate works fine.

You need an adapter to support the nose of the converter.   There are little billet things that pop on, or GM has a factory piece for the 4L80e/LQ4 combo that uses longer crank/flexplate bolts and does the same thing.
