Project on hold for the winter  :(

Still gonna try to pick up some parts to get it going over the winter and have it going next spring.

Haha, +1.   I almost look forward to winter a little, it's an excuse to fix all the stuff I broke/found wrong over the summer.  ;)

It's pretty simple to mod them, cut the long tube (can't remember which side) and get a second short side axle shaft = Perfect fit   :bacon:

Ok so now this project has gotten a lot more serious, I found an 8.8 rear end already converted with stock Gen 1 brackets on it. Bought it from a guy that has never heard of this site and was a real do-it-yourselfer. He even had the front rotors drilled out and converted to 5x4.5. Also included was a driveshaft for a Ford T5.... not sure if the length is right yet... and a fuel cell! his best run was a 10.5 with a stroked 302... 347 and aboot 500 HP he said. Weighting is at around 2,400 lbs.

Sadly the diff has not had the longer driver's side tube cut and shortened... Do you guys think I should do that? how much should a place charge to do it? I already know a place that will modify the driveshaft if needed.

I'm sorry I didn't catch it if it was said. Is it the mustang or the explorer rear end that you can cut down the longer side put a shorter axle in and it'll be the right length?

It's the Explorer diff, the left side is longer and can be cut down to match the right side and use a right side shaft. What is great aboot the Explorer 8.8 is that it has 31 spline shafts while the Mustang has 28, and is much cheaper from salvage yards.

Wow that's awesome and folks have gone 1.4s 60s and I think high 8s on the factory rear suspension with an 8.8 in place

The FB with this setup and a junkyard turbo 5.3 might be the ultimate budget quarter mile machine.
