I use a standard class-D amp and run the RCA input to a bluetooth receiver. Between the amp and bluetooth receiver, I added a RCA-RCA gain knob so that I can adjust volume without having to use my phone buttons. I had ran what you're discussing (3.5mm headphone jack directly to the amp) and it was annoying. You have to adjust the gain for the amp to the max that you'd want to listen to music at and when you plug your phone in with the amp on, it usually makes a terrible squelch.
