Strange question about FD elbow room
« on: October 06, 2020, 11:20:40 AM »
I am 5'7" and have short legs. I find that when I have the seat at the correct position to reach the pedals and the tilt is set comfortably, my elbow hits the seat bolster when I turn to the 5 o'clock position and my arm gets wedged against the steering wheel.

Am I the only freak to have this issue?

Has anyone else improved this and if so how? stock seats? different steering wheel?

I currently have stock leather seats and an mx5 style nardi steering wheel.

I'd imagine the Japanese are in similar ergonomic position as you. I'm not too certain what you could do. Maybe a smaller diameter wheel.
Being 6'3" my arms are usually fairly extended. I'm probably the size limit for the chassis without modification.

I am 6' 1" and fit comfortably in the car with no precarious elbow situation like you are talking about.  That said moving around or trying to reach for things tell me I can't own this car when I hit 60 years old LOL Anything other then sitting in the driving position sort of stinks.

I would have thought you are the perfect size for a FD.

I roughly overlaid 2 different Cobra seats. Looks like the more bucket style seat would give me more arm room as it supports the shoulders rather than the torso.

Both my 93 FD's are daily driven and while driving I have absolutely no issues with the sitting posture.

But trying to reach for things in the glove box or the rear storage units and getting in and out of the car.  They can be extremely uncomfortable.

My main issue is the doors don't extend forward far enough.  I have to fold my legs up to get in or out. LOL

For Gunny, maybe you can add a little more lean back to the seat? It wouldn't take much to get your elbows off the seat.

That does kinda work but it's a bit uncomfortable as I am too laid back.

I cannot go too far either. Hurts my neck. I have to lean back for a little extra head room.

I am currently looking at getting a short steering wheel boss so that I can move the steering wheel a bit closer to the dash.

I have confirmed that my legs are abnormally short  :)

I have been playing with my seating position and the most comfortable position for my arms is with the seat all the way back. However, my legs want the seat to be about 4 clicks forward which leads to too much tilt in the seat.

I am now looking at getting a Nardi Classic with a short hub kit.

My current wheel has 80mm offset (base to underside of grip).

A Classic with a short hub should give me 55mm offset (I would need to modify the boss to fit the Nardi.

A classic with a short hub and adapter gives me an offset of 66mm.

It would be a fair bit of work but you could make custom pedals that reach further towards the seat.

I guess I could make some kind of spacers to put behind the pedals. Like you say, even that would be a lot of work.
