Mounting harness submarine belt

Hi guys,

Please ignore my filthy car (this was taken as a reference pic before teardown). My chassis/safety shop installed my Schroth 6pt according to the picture below:

It seems this goes against most of the instructions I see, which only want the sub straps mounted +/- 20 degrees from vertical.

I would really rather avoid drilling the floor pan and installing a spreader plate, but I'd rather do that than die in an accident. Anyone have experiencing mounting sub straps in our cars? I thought about using a strong steel bar that runs horizontally between the brackets to mount them to instead, so they don't have to run so far back.

That looks like a nut-buster. You definitely want to move those forward.
