Well, on page 6-347 of the official GM 1998 F-body repair manual, in the section labeled "Crankshaft Front Oil Seal Replacement" for the 5.7 liter engine, it says "Important: Do not lubricate the oil seal sealing surface".

Maybe mythical, but only if GM is in on the joke. :D
