8.8 diff DSS driveshaft assembly pics required
« on: September 05, 2019, 01:19:38 PM »
Does anyone have some decent pics that show the correct way to assemble the DSS cobra driveshafts?

I want to check mine as I have some drivetrain noise. I did a bit of @assuming@ when I assembled mine so may have got it wrong.

Thanks

I've been browsing a few pics and I am pretty sure the diff side of the shafts are correct, however, can anyone confirm the orientation of the cage and the inner race?

This is the orientation I fitted them in, but I am starting to think the cage is in round the wrong way.

So I found this pic in my archive. It's not massively clear, but it looks to me that the cage is in the opposite way round (look at contours marked in red) if you compare it to the orientation in the previous post.

What do you reckon?

If I had to hazard a guess I would say that was wear on the corners with the larger radius, I don't remember our ones being like that but it was eight years ago.

Does the inner bit have the splines recessed on either side?  If it does, that's usually the side that faces the axle.

I have a decent pic of the core orientation now I think. It's more the cage orientation I need to confirm. I might just have dissasemble the thing again and flip the cage to test. Wanted to try and avoid that without knowing for certain though. Messy job.

Might be faster to just call DSS and ask?

I don't think the cage has an orientation. Either way should work the same.

They cannot be completely assembled incorrectly without a hammer and a lot of damage.

A worn CV will make a pretty noticeable repeating click. A bad wheel bearing will usually make a single click when the wheel direction changes.

Maybe the cage is just worn then. Having never driven the car until fitting the cobra diff, there's nothing to say that the driveshaft weren't already shagged.
