nomotor RX8.
« on: June 03, 2018, 06:40:00 AM »
Hi Team,

My name is Cole, I'm from New Zealand

Today i picked up my latest RX8.

I'm not decided on what engine to repower it with yet, but the price was right for the car so jumped on it while i had the chance.
Before you all say LS, in NZ we have limited numbers due to the fact they only came factory in select Holdens.
What we do have is a plethora of Japanese engines so tossing up between 1JZGTE, J5 MZR, or K24A.
Hopefully there is some support for swapping other engines here besides the LS.

I also have a 1992 FD that still has its 13B although single turbo

The RX8 isn't much to look at so here are some pictures of both.

Nice FD!

I vote 1JZ, SR20 or RB series, depending on what's available.   :)

K series would be cool, but 1/2JZ would probably be the best bet.  Nice FD

I think the 1JZ will be the choice,

It seems to be the shortest and will fit under the firewall the easiest.

My plan at this stage is:

Use the R15m-d factory 5 speed with a PMC Motorsport adapter and flywheel
I'll use an All4Swap CANverter to input the correct signals to the dash cluster.
Custom engine mounts.

Not sure how I'll relocate the RX8 electric steering rack as in NZ we have a strict process when it comes to certification of modifications.
We'll get to that but for now, I'll get some of the major items like engine and adapter.

Cheers.

What does the 1JZ weigh compared to the Rotary.  The thing about the RX8 is that NA engine is very light and with no turbos and stuff like the FD the engine weight comes into play.  I think I would hesitate a little on the big iron 1JZ lump in there.  I know a RX8 swap that put a iron LS in it and it wrecked the handling so much he had to redo it with an aluminum block and it made the car in his eyes "10x more fun"

Just something to consider and believe me I am a fan of the JZ engines!

Interested in that CAN converter that something readily available over there?

So I have a small update,
Still in the Planning stages now.

I have decided on the engine and now have a 1JZGTE VVTI sitting in my garage.
It is from a JZX110 which uses Toyota's terrible ETCS-I throttle so I have had an adapter plate made up to use the RX8 Throttle ( also larger)
I have ordered my gearbox adapter and flywheel now so looking forward to that arriving.
Ill be changing to hydraulic power steering and looking at the viability of using an NC MX5 subframe and rack.
If that doesn't work I'll make some mounts to use an FD rack on the RX8 subframe.
I have also got individual "Yaris" coils and bracket these use an inbuilt ignitor and will make wiring simpler.
I'll be using a Link G4+ Fury ECU for engine control.
Here is my pinout plan so far. I'll be using every I/O available

Interested in that CAN converter that something readily available over there?
I have attached the instruction manual for the CANverter.
Its Made by a guy named Yury in Russia, he sells them all over the world He is a pretty good guy too.
His page is here https://www.facebook.com/groups/all4swap/

I wont actually need to use the converter as the Link ECU has the ability to output custom can data and can be configured to run the dash directly

Thats all the boring stuff out of the way. Here are some photos of the RX7 at a recent track day.

I'm glad you went with the 1JZ. Seemed to make the most sense for your location and car.
94 BB SBE LS1 Full Mamo top, MS3ProU with TC, RONIN 8.8 and another custom dual 2.5" stainless exhaust. Too loud, need bigger muffler....

Yeah, I would love to have done a K24 but just way too tall.
1J will be tougher too.

Thanks. the wheels are:
17x10.5+18 - 245/40 front
17X11+25 - 255/40 rear
Front fenders have been cut and widened by 10mm rears have been rolled.

Thanks.

Super Excited! My flywheel and gearbox adapter arrived.

Its not much of an update but I'll be taking it into work in the next couple of weeks so updates will begin thick and fast.
And for that reason ill edit and move the contents to a build thread in a better area.

Oh and I think I have found the spoiler I'll use
