Adapting a BMW ZF trans to an Audi AAN 20V turbo.
« on: May 08, 2016, 09:23:10 AM »
I have been helping a friend with his 242 Volvo build, its going to run an AAN Audi engine and be a track/drift car.  I started on the build by modifying his intake manifold from side throttle body to front to fit between the Volvo strut towers.  Later he had me make a rear sump pan to fit over the rack. Because the Audi motor comes in AWD platforms only there aren't many RWD transmission options.  He comes from a BMW background so he was interested in running a ZF five speed. As a small, lightweight, fairly rugged transmission with a low street price, it fit the bill. In order to adapt it to the engine I cut the transmission using a combination of cutoff wheel and my lathe.  Because the transmission is so off balance on the lathe I spun it by hand to face the cut after using a cutoff wheel.  Volvo used VW diesels in some of their cars and my friend had sourced a bellhousing from one that bolted up the AAN engine.  I used my mill to shorten it and reach the desired depth of the input shaft.  I decided to base the distance from the engine based on the input shaft in the pilot bushing, which I made from bronze for the swap.  With the input shaft an 1/8" from bottoming on the bushing the splines were fully engaged with the clutch disk and the throwout bearing was nicely placed with the pressure plate. Cast alloy welds great.

Thanks guys!  It was a fun little project. Now I understand how all the Scandinavians get away with their weird engine and trans combos.  It seems like every Gatebil car has some odd ball setup that was welded together in the depths of a dark winter.

This car is about to run, pretty neat setup.  I made the turbo manifold, did all the intake plumbing, the catch can, intake manifold, the bell mouth for the throttle body blow off valve, the oil pan, and the transmission adaptation of course.

Nice work.
I used to play with a boosted Quattro track car. That motor is a tough beast!

Is that a DBW blow off valve? What's the logic behind that?
Also, what are you using for engine management?

Is that one of the motors that sounds like half a v10? Like the new RS3.
