Horrible experience with Hinson Supercars
« on: October 23, 2013, 04:59:47 PM »
Buyer beware!!!

I own a shop in Southern California called Illicit Performance. We specialize in rotaries and 7s, but to say that's all we do would be inaccurate. We pretty much do it all, engine swaps, engine builds for piston and rotary, tuning, wiring, light fabrication, etc.

We had a request from a customer to go LS V8 in his '93 RX-7. We started planning a LS2 swap for him, using a GTO engine, F-Body T-56, and stock rear end. At the time the decision was made to go with Hinson Supercars as we didn't want to have to modify the firewall and at the time they seemed like a good company to deal with. HUGE mistake.

We started gathering parts in March of this year. Ordered the motorset and ordered all the bits from Hinson...subframe kit, headers, radiator and cooling fans. Everything except for the subframe kit came in on time. The subframe kit took an extra 4 weeks or so to come in. At this time the car was at a body shop getting body work done and prep for a paint job.

We then ordered some more parts for the swap from Hinson, clutch hydraulics, electronic modules, and a few other odds & ends. I place the order and it was about 2 months before the parts actually came in. During this time we were focused on other projects, the car was at the paint shop still, it was one of those things where we looked at our inventory and realized the parts weren't there yet. Called Hinson and we got them within 4 days. Mistake on their part, but we're still making progress.

The build starts gaining steam when we get the car back from the body shop. We go to drop the engine in and realize that the GTO mount perches won't work. We call Hinson, and to our astonishment they don't really know what mounts we need to run to get the engine to sit in their subframe. They weren't sure if it was C5 or C6 Corvette or maybe something different. A week passes and they finally confirm we need a C5 and C6 perch and it will drop right in. We order them up and get the engine mounted.

At this point the customer is now living back east, he is in the service and got transferred out there. He wants to fly over to drive his car home. Because our deadline was drawing closer, we both made the decision to go with Hinson's y-pipe and their 3.5" "V8 muffler". This way it would cut down on the fabrication and we could get it done faster. I order the y-pipe first and order their custom 3.5" muffler afterwards. When we get the y-pipe, this is what it looked like:

Notice there is no flaring, no cutting as shown in their parts diagram. As we were going for as little exhaust fab as possible for speed, these parts were useless to us. The exhaust system, however, this is where Hinson really shined. :/

We were in a time crunch when we ordered the exhaust. We had about 2 weeks to finish the car when the order was placed. Hinson said that the exhaust was at "our warehouse in Florida" and in order to get it UPS 2 Day shipping it would be an extra $140. Fine, let's do it, we need the part. And what do we get? A Racing Beat dual rotary cat-back. Not the 3.5"  Custom V8 muffler that, according to their site, requires absolutely no welding, no fabrication. Then we notice another detail:

Look closely at the label. First off, it did not ship from Florida, but shipped from Anaheim. Anaheim is maybe 2 hours away from us and anything shipped UPS Ground would arrive the next day. The phone number on the label under my name is for Pettit Racing, I guess that's the "warehouse in Florida" that Hinson spoke of. The messed up part? Why was I charged $140 in shipping for this to be dropped shipped from Racing Beat, 2 hours away, where shipping would normally be $45? Unbelievable.

So I contact Hinson and tell them I'm shipping their exhaust back and want a full refund. That they ripped me off on shipping and sent me something completely different than what they described on their web site. I spoke with a gentlemen by the name of Levi, who told me that it was his fault the website hadn't been changed on the exhaust, that they use RB duals on their swaps because its quieter and the customers like it. And all you have to do is extend the piping 18" to make it work. If I would have known this, I wouldn't have bought the exhaust! He tells me to send everything back and he'd refund the amounts, including the difference in shipping for the muffler as it was drop shipped. I'd have to eat $45 plus my cost of shipping everything back. Fine, I just want this nightmare over already.

I ship everything out, they get it back on the 15th of this month. I call in and speak with David, he says that they need to go through the boxes and I will see a refund within 48 hours. I give them all week and call them back yesterday, still no refund. David says they've been busy and I'd have the money in my account by that evening (last night). Today, still no refund. Call them up and their secretary says she'll look into it and call me right back. This was at 9:30 am this morning. Needless to say I never got a call back and had to open a dispute with my bank to get the money back.

I've been working on cars for a long time, for myself and for others, and this has been by far the worst experience I've had with a vendor, EVER. Do business with this company at your own risk!!!

Soooo did you just not pay attention to the endless other posts on here saying don't do business with Hinson, and ordered through them anyways?

The research process for picking the kit (Hinson or Samburg) did not include this site, even though I've been a member here for a while. I signed up because of my Miata swap before I opened up the shop. I wish I would have known, but hindsight is 20/20. Figured I let others know of my experience.

We understand that you're frustrated, and we hope this will help clear up some misunderstandings. Most of the comments that you have said are fair. Since we have moved in to our new location, we have been diligently working to improve delivery times. We now have many systems in stock, and we are working towards same day shipments for these custom products.

We are responsible for the comments of all of our agents, but to be fair, the sales rep that worked this deal is no longer with us. The incomplete information offered by the rep was a significant reason for his dismissal. You should have been told there would be a need to build an expansion pipe built to connect our Y-pipe to the stock exhaust location. Obviously, this is crucial information when planning a project.

The y-pipe expansion should have been done. It was an oversight by our private label manufacturer. We appreciate your understanding, and we apologize for the inconvenience.

Yes, the shipping costs were miscalculated on the RB exhaust. Our RB supplier is based out of Florida, and we were initally told that it would ship cross-country. A refund for the shipping was never questioned when it was brought to our attention.

All refunds have been applied to your account as promised. These refunds take 2-4 business days to show on your account. We wish you luck with the balance of the build. Let us know if there is something we can do to assist you with the build. We would jump at the opportunity to show you how much we value your business.

Thank you,

Sounds like he took care of you and maybe you should have waited to talk so poor about him.  Sucks that they had a bad employee that caused problems though.
My mom owned a RX7, I even learned to drive a stick on it.  After I was good at driving a stick, the RX7 went to a junk yard and I bought a real car.

Well what was I supposed to do? I contacted Hinson last week when I knew the parts arrived with them and asked when I would see the refund. I did not beat them up over the phone. If they said it was going to take a week, then so be it. They told me 48 hours. A week elapses, and I'm told "you'll have it tonight". When that didn't happen and I call in, I'm told I'll receive a call back in an hour with the status of my refund and that didn't happen either, although to Brian's credit, I did receive a phone call from him at 3 pm yesterday. Unfortunately I had already started the dispute process, which is what I told the secretary I would do if I did not have an answer or refund by 12 pm yesterday. What else was I supposed to do? I don't care if it takes 48 hours or a week or whatever, just be up front with me. I have a customer waiting for this car and deadlines, one of which was already ruined, and I have to deliver. It's not like this is a personal car and I'm being pissy for the sake of being pissy. These kind of issues make me look bad to my customer therefore it is a big deal.

Hinson supercars is not far from me,  I drop off packages at fedex which is just across the interstate from their new shop. I drove by a few weeks back to just see the setup... I've order a few things from them through ebay when in a time crunch, all ebay orders through them have been good.  But I will say whoever is doing their shipping likes screwing up their inventory... Im not complaining about getting extra parts  :)

I've had fine service from Hinson, even of late.  It's a mixed bag from many vendors these days.

I really want stainless headers so I've been literally on the fence about ordering because of threads like this. I just want the parts without this nightmare situation happening.

I know this is a thread necro but I had to reply.

These are the same excuses Hinson has used for 8 years or so since he started "Hinson Supercars".  It is always some random employees fault that is no longer employed there.

Painted Subframe with only tack welds holding it together:  New employees fault, he has been fired
Wrong parts shipped:  New employees fault, he has been fired
Website wrong information:  New employees fault, he has been fired
Lied to on the phone:  New employees fault, she has been fired
Y pipe expansion not done:  oversight by our private label manufacturer
Parts not delivered within 2-3 months of when promised, we moved to ANOTHER new location
shipping costs were miscalculated:  suppliers fault

Same exact stories and same exact excuses since Hinson existed as a company.  Brian always talks a good game and makes unlimited promises when you talk to him.  The reality rarely matches the promises.

Before there were no other options, now there are plenty and those that do business with him now....are fools soon to be parted with their money.

This is the same story I used to hear 12 years ago on the now expired TorqueCentral.com (Rx7 V8s mostly).
I don't think the Hinson guys are evil, just indifferent to what counts in business (customer satisfaction).

I know my experience is now around 7-8 years old but I did want to say that I had no issues with Hinson when I did my first LSX FD build. Everything was of good quality and shipped timely with good communication. I hope that this was just a blip as I am looking to do another build in the near future.
