I finally got some time to work on the car last weekend.   I removed the front cross bar and smoothed the attach point.   Welded up some unecessary hole, ground off studs etc.

Got my B2600 bellhousing last Friday from a MN junkyard and should get my trans this week from Screamin88.

Got a chance to stab the mock up motor in and see what problems pop up.  It's in there cokeyed but I couldn't hold it straight and take the pictures.   The k member have been trimed slightly and I'll have to box the firewall for thermostat and CAS cleanance.  The oil filter will have to be relocated.

Turbo side should be pretty clean.  New O2 housing and downpipe will be easy work.

Intake side will have some issue with the brake line/booster.  I will have to be careful on the plenum design and move the brake lines down to the inner fender.

being behind the front axle centerline will make it a true "midengine" layout .
like the "factory advertisement"  :)

Cool build. I feel like I'm a little in the dark about the 4g63. I know they can make power, but what are they capable on a totally stock engine? I really like the idea of this setup in a miata.

How expensive are the adapter plates, and the 16g 20gs (I Know certain models came on different cars/trucks stock) and what kind of power can you make with them?

How about engine management?

Will be following this thread

Thanks

as soon as I build the adapter I'll let you know!  8)

I build my own turbos, pieced together a small 16g for about $200 through used parts, rebuild kit and Ebay.

I estimate my motor makes about 325 with a stock 14b in my Talon (to run 12.3's).   I use a custom eprom chip and MAFT Translatorhttp://www.fullthrottlespeed.com/itemdesc.asp+ic+050DSMTRANS1G+eq++Tp+a to tune with.   I'll probably go to DSMlink http://dsmlink.com/ to tune with once the RX7 is running.

Sounds like a fun project! Ive always toyed with the idea of doing the same thing, or in a starquest :) I think my buddy still has some of the swaps we've done on his site http://www.foreignmuscle.com/ 4g63 awd colt, auto 4g63 eagle summit, my car is on there along with a few customer cars.

And I saw someone ask a few posts up about stock block capability, my car made 6xxawhp on a stock piston/rod/crank 6bolt over 5 years ago and it is still running strong (ive actually had rods/pistons sitting on a shelf for over 4 years awaiting failure of the stock stuff)

Well damn...went to bolt in the trans and the stock body mount locations were cut off by the previous owners v8 swap.   Guess I need to fab mounts.

How about the oil pan. I did some research on this motor after you posted this and read that the oil pans on these motors are front sump. Any interference with the rack/cross member?

Edit: Guess it doesnt matter as the whole engine is behind the front centerline. That works too!

Got some progress this weekend and went backwards a little. The previous owner removed the stock rear trans mounts so I had to fabricate a rear cross member so the hour long job turned into about 6.

Here the first version of the cross member. I say first because until I get the engine bolted up and the driveline angles set, I expect to cut it up slightly. Used a Chevy trans mount from a 92 C1500 for a rubber mount. I plan on getting some better DOM tubing for the final version, the exhaust pipe is strong enough for what I need it for right now.

This is where I went backwards some. I had the motor positioned where the front sump pan fit behind the K member. The bellhousing is 3" from the firewall so sciff5 it looks like I'll be fabricating a rear sump pan from scratch.

Since my original mounts are gone, I positioned the trans giving about 1/2" of driveshaft clearance before it bottomed out and aligning the shifter in the opening.   Does this look right?

If you ever get tired of that t2 trans, i got a buddy of mine who is working on a bellhousing adaptor to mate a R154 (supra trans) to a 4g63 motor..  :drive: .  Should be a badass car, those 4g63 motors take a beating.
