Drivetrain / Re: Independent Suspension Rear Dif Options
« on: April 12, 2023, 07:20:12 AM »
Nope look at the Ronin 8.8 kit it uses the explorer IRS housing.  For low 400's whp some have broken diffs and others haven't. Mine lasted a long time getting beat on with more power than you.  I did have the Turbo 2 FC clutch pack diff which is stronger than the torsen style FD differential.  The main perk of the 8.8 aside from strength is the option to change gear ratios. You'd probably prefer 3.73's.  You'll spend probably $3500 on the swap.

I would super benefit from 373's. I'll look a little harder at it. I'm not sure I even anyone that would want that job. I might have one guy actually. Thanks for your input. I actually learned a bunch.

What chassis, and why are you against the Ford IRS swap?  How much power are you making?

The T2 clutch diff is great but idk how easy they are to find anymore.

If you have an FD the stock torsen diff doesn't tend to slowly die it tends to grenade.

I have a 93 FD. Not high horsepower. I'm high 300's now, by the time I'm done I might be low 400's. Nothing crazy. Probably why it hasn't grenaded. I don't beat the snot out of it.

I was under impression that the Ford swap converted the car to a solid rear axle. Is that wrong? God I feel like a newb. A couple of things deter from it. It seems a pricey route, and I would honestly love a ß close to a plug and play  option as possible.  It seems like there's a good amount of work to do that swap.

Drivetrain / Independent Suspension Rear Dif Options

So, my stock Mazda rear end is slowing dying. I obviously need to replace it. I don't want to do the Ford swap. I don't want a solid rear axle. Years ago I was looking at the Katz 1.5, but I haven't found anyone that sells them right now. Any ideas on that?

Other options come to mind? I found one shop that sella Cusco, but I don't know much about that unit.

I'm curious to see what you guys are running. Any insight would be appreciated. This is the one part on the car I've never had to mess with. I'm thinking I'll have to get axle's to go with it? I feel like that was a thing when I thought about doing this years ago. I've since forgotten. Old age..

       Thanks!

What kind of driving will you primarily be doing in the FD?

Ohlins are a popular choice for a mix of comfort, street friendly compliance and still good for hitting the track at times. With their spring rate options you can get something more refined for your driving style. I will be switching to them myself if I cannot get my current ones rebuilt.

I'll be doing 90% street. Eventually I'll do auto crossing but that's not for a while. I don't think I'll ever track it again. I think those days are over for me. I'm not sure I have it in me anymore. I'll check out the Ohlins. I don't even know where people are getting their parts these days lol.

   Hi,

My suspension is tired. I don't have a coilover setup right now, but I am probably going to move forward with one as it seems like what everyone is doing. I'm curious to see what people are running and their thoughts on them. Favorite brands etc.

       Thanks!

Drivetrain / Re: The dreaded clutch not disengaging issue
« on: April 14, 2021, 08:16:02 PM »
It seems like years ago I was chasing the same problem.  So I switched to motul fluid and wrapped my clutch line with heat wrap.  I want to say that helped but if I remember right the real answer was when I put a new slave in it the problem went away.

You make sense. The clutch line may be the only thing not wrapped actually. Did you ever notice the transmission, or tunnel getting warm when you drove? Mine gets warm even when i'm not really getting into it.

Drivetrain / The dreaded clutch not disengaging issue

     Hey,

I've done some searching, both on here and online in general, and a lot of the threads on here seem to be many years old. I have a couple of questions, as well as I wanted to see if there was any new info out there. I have an LS1 out of a GTO, and it's it's a Hinson car. The clutch sticks in gear after driving a while. I think this is a heat thing, as the transmission gets hot pretty quickly. I'm thinking that is from my long tubes just being too close. Has anyone had problems with heat causing these type of things? I literally feel like i'm cooking the fluid. I also may do a slave cylinder at some point, but not until I get this thing running cooler.

Side Note: I found out that the car was running lean, so I corrected that, and it does run cooler, but still not cool enough. So while that was part of the issue, it obviously wasn't all of it.

My question is, does anyone on here run shorty headers on an FD, and if so, do they create some more clearance as opposed to the long tubes?  I've heat wrapped what I can and it's still happening, so I need to create some space and/or maybe fab a heat shield. Or, has anyone had their exhaust heat the transmission enough to cause the slave to fail?

Any input, or experiences in this will be helpful.

                     Thanks.

Welcome!  As said above, lots of good info in build threads. The search function can be somewhat finicky so if your not finding what you need, just ask!

          Thank you!

there are a lot of good posts in this forum.  Not a lot of random chatter either.  When you post a question no one tells you to search they usually help!  It's quite nice.

LOL! That is nice. That being said, i'll search before posting things. The other rx7 forum was brutal back in the day.

Hi,

I'm James. I'm a masshole. I have a 93 RX7 that i've had since 98', and went V8 sometime in 08'. Car currently has a 5.7 LS1 (GTO) motor in it. It's been in the car long enough that i'm starting to have normal issues that i've never had on a V8 car, so i'm here to learn and see what I want to do going forward.
