The Lounge / Junk work
« on: November 25, 2018, 01:16:08 PM »
I am helping out a friend of mine with his 4.8 turbo 3rd Gen Camaro.

I thought some of you may appreciate this work I am undoing from the guy that did the swap.

Jumper cable alternator wire, plastic pvc heater core adapters, lets use 2 hose clamps...wait it still leaks, PCV to nowhere

It should be a cool car when finished, I'll update progress here and post some videos too

Forced Induction/Nitrous / Turbo or Nitrous for my LT1?
« on: September 05, 2018, 11:55:44 AM »
Hey guys,

I am wanting more power in my LT1.  I already have a cam, and valvetrain mods, and also have ARP rod studs and main bolts.  Engine is a gen II SBC (LT1), 2 bolt main, stock crank.  What would be better for longevity, a 100 shot of nitrous or a turbo at 8 psi?  I have no problem changing pistons but don't want to spend the money on heads yet...

Suspension/Brakes/Wheels / Torque Arm, 3 Link or 4 Link?
« on: June 11, 2018, 12:45:17 PM »
At the last drift event, my larger stiffer tires were too much for the urethane bushings in my rear suspension links.  I destroyed all 8 of them (FB RX7 has a horrible 4 link rear)

I am planning on totally redoing the rear suspension and wanted some opinions on setup.
1) Build a tri link that goes through the floor and is the same length as the lower links, and replace watts link with panhard bar.

2) move upper link mounting points so they are more parallel, use rodends on all links

3) design and build a triangulated 4 link setup, no need for a panhard bar

4) design and build a torque arm setup, fix watts link or build panhard bar

I know pro touring guys really like torque arms, and it may help with such a powerful motor in a light car

I really don't want to keep going through bushings, but the car works good when the bushings are intact

General Tech / Wheel stud removal
« on: April 25, 2018, 08:57:54 PM »
I cannot get the wheel studs on my front FC hubs to come out, even a sledge hammer didn't do anything.

Has anyone had this problem?  Im think there may be some weird corrosion between the hub and wheel studs.  Gonna try a buddies press later this week, but don't want to hurt the hub

General Tech / Machining Service
« on: March 28, 2018, 06:26:14 AM »
Does anyone here want to do a quick machining job for me?  I might need some wheel spacers made, I will draw them up and can send a DXF.  I need them kinda quick as well.  I know a few of you guys have mills in your garage.

Electronics / Boost Capacitor.

Cool little projects.  I like the CAP starter booster idea.  I need to pull my fuel tank to redo the pick up and am not looking forward to it.

Drivetrain / What oil do you run and how do you keep it cool?
« on: January 30, 2018, 08:25:32 AM »
I am thinking about changing the weight/grade of the oil I am running my LT1 and wanted to see what people use in racing applications for their SBC/LS1.  Right now I am running 5w30 conventional since the engine is new,  I didn't see any major oil pressure issues, but hot idle oil pressure was right at 25 psi.  I know that is technically correct for a street driven LT1 but I am thinking I may want a little more oil pressure when hot.  I am thinking of running a synthetic 5w40 or something but I am not entirely sure.  Also I am looking at getting a good oil cooler that has a fan and thermostat, any suggestions?

Interior/Exterior / Good HVLP gun (hopefully cheap)
« on: January 08, 2018, 11:18:51 AM »
I know there are some of y'all that have done your own painting, my wife was in an accident with our Rav4 and I need a new bumper cover and fender.  I am considering getting some new parts since I can't find anything used on car-part.com.  I want to try painting them with an HVLP gun, and want to get a relatively cheap one that will last for more than this job so maybe I can paint the FB eventually.

What brand/model do you guys use?

Suspension/Brakes/Wheels / Tie Rod Adapters
« on: October 20, 2017, 08:13:10 AM »
Does anyone know who sells something that allows you to put a standard rod end on the end of a metric inner tie rod?  I have looked and not found anything.  Im wondering if I will just have to make it...

Electronics / 3D Printed Bulkhead connector
« on: June 15, 2017, 09:39:47 AM »
I am looking at getting a bulkhead connector for my engine harness and looking at the plastic ones gave me the idea of trying to 3d print one.  Has anyone heard of this before?  I may try to design one if I can't find one that would take something like deutsch DT or DTM pins.

Fabrication / Good starter welder
« on: April 30, 2017, 09:31:53 PM »
After I missed out on a welder for $30 at a garage sale this weekend, the wife suggested she get one for me for fathers day/birthday.  I am looking for a 110v mig that can handle doing exhaust and other simple fab projects.  I saw that eastwood makes one, is it any good?  Id really like to spend under 400 bucks so likely getting a chinese made or well used lincoln/miller

Any ideas?

Drivetrain / School me on Oil Pans
« on: February 09, 2017, 09:54:56 AM »
I am thinking my engine failure was due to possible oil pump starvation.  I modified the stock LT1 pan to similiar dimensions as the grannys swap pan and I think I do not have enough capacity.  Do you guys think its possible I starved the oil pump and ran the pan dry?  I put about 5 qts in the pan.

Anyway I am looking at either modifying my existing pan further or buying a new pan.  It seems like most pans are marketed for street/strip but since I am making a street/track car I assume my needs are different.

Am I wrong in thinking that for a track car you need a good windage tray, increased capacity and possibly some baffling?  Would adding wings onto my stock pan help in those regards?  I cannot make the pan super deep near the front of the engine since the cross member gets in the way.  I am thinking that is a major issue for keeping the crank happy.
