Title: New Corbeau Sportline Evolution and Evolution X Seats! style and head room
Post by: TTM on January 09, 2014, 03:17:09 PM
Hey guys Corbeau just released its latest line-up for 2014.  They added the Sportline Evolution (reclining) and Evolution X (fixed-back).  This seat looks cleaner and more street friendly than the other Sportline seats with the added benefit of an incredibly short base-to-butt height for tall drivers or small cars.  We tried fitting a couple different racing seat options in a 1985 gsl and found we couldn't get proper headroom (not to mention space for a helmet).  This seat may end up in that tight squeeze gsl at some point.  If you need the headroom...BAM!

That looks narrow enough in the thigh bolster area to have decent cage clearance also.   My fixed back seats are LOW but wide enough that cage clearance is problematic.

I wonder how they would fit in a fd

Good observation.  The reason they offered this seat in a fixed-back format was to make it narrower, they got rid of the reclining mechanism and freed up some precious inches.

Where the FD has problems is the shoulder area hitting the door panel.  I don't have time right now to go look at the differences but the FX1 pro JUST won't really fit. So if these are smaller they may.  The low thing is much needed in the FD too.

If you take a look at the FX1 Pro dimensions below, it looks like the new Sportline Evolution is 1.5" narrower at the shoulder. Hopefully that is enough and combined with the low cushion height it could be a very nice fit.

Hey guys we tried calling up some of our local rx-7 guys in here Minnesota and no-dice everyone has cars buried in storage.

We really would love to put one of these in an rx-7 to see if they are going to fit like we think they will and we do realize there is some risk in being the first to try a new product.  SOOO if you are planning on picking up some racing/street seats this season and have your eye on this seat please call us because we are going to offer the first norotors member to buy this seat a very good deal

Is there a suede option? What about a sub belt?
Title: Re: New Corbeau Sportline Evolution and Evolution X Seats! style and head room
Post by: TTM on January 20, 2014, 02:21:26 PM
Hey wicked I just checked with Corbeau on that.  The seat is too new, they wouldn't even do a custom order for microsuede.  As far as sub belts, Corbeau won't put in the slot for it from the factory which usually means its either not possible or wouldn't work in a useful location.

EDIT:

We want to give you guys the best info available, so I edited part of this post.  I should have posted this Schroth harness.  Its a 4-point harness with anti-submarine qualities designed into it.  It does a much better job than an improperly configured submarine belt will do.

We got great dry conditions on Vancouver Island so far this month. Temps around 45 to 50 degrees during the day. A little chilly, but definitely not the epic rain and snow we normally get. First race of the year was in Victoria last Sunday the second will be on Feb 2 at Saratoga.

UPDATE:   I just got a notice that the seats have arrived at my us post box!!!
Time to head over to the mainland!!

HI guys,
Here is my first real update .
My first impression of the seats are that they are beautiful!
I love the look of them and they are going to really add to the looks of my car.
They are really light, I am unaccustomed to race  seats but these are really light to me the whole package, 2 seats, brackets and box weighted like 87 lbs.
Corbeau packs the seats quite well as you would expect.

Comes with the hardware you need to attach seats to brackets but not brackets to floor as you would imagine you gotta reuse your old floor bolts or get new ones.
Also a chunk of metal that is used to attach your lap belt receiver.

I started with the passenger seat.
When putting the seat in the car without the bracket , just to see what it would be like, the seats seemed like they would most likely fit, other then the recliner handle. It seemed to be fouling  some plastic, I was thinking that I might have to either take off the plastic cover on the recliner or maybe do something about the plastic on the door frame.
All this concern though proved to be for no reason. This seat fits near perfectly, there is just enough space for the recliner handle, the shoulder area fits with the contour of the door. The seats slide fore and aft without issue, and will lean all the way back.

The only 2 fitment issues are that 1) the seat is so tall that it will rub and or interfere the sun visor when  tilting forward if the base is in  a more forward position, so if you want to lean your seat all the way forward then you have to side it back first, then you can slide it forward again.
and 2) When you are leaning the seat forward, it rubs the roof at the door sill. TO be clear not the roof just the sill where the roof bends down, and just the side of the headrest not the top.

So this is it so far, going back out after dinner.

Stuff I don't like or would change, if the seats were an inch or 2 shorter on the top it would be nice, a hair narrower at the head rest.

Over all so far I am really pleased and very impressed.

Here are some quick picks.

[attachimg=1][attachimg=2][attachimg=3][attachimg=4]

About the extra head room...... I hate to say with the corbeau brackets there is minus 1 inch extra room...

I think I can buy a quarter to 3/8ths of an inch taking out some washers

but it looks like I will be needing to remove the sliders.

I don't think you'll find ANY seats that get much additional headroom by the time you bolt them to sliders.

Mount them as low as possible, directly to the floor and I'd bet there is an improvement vs. stock.
Title: Re: New Corbeau Sportline Evolution and Evolution X Seats! style and head room
Post by: Skeltic on February 01, 2014, 12:08:54 AM
Futile gesture but I took out the 3 washers used for mounting the seat to the slider and the slider to the metal base and that bought me about 1/2 a centimeter.  So now I am within  3/4 of an inch of stock. Looks like I will be pulling the sliders and welding up that base plate, that should get me at least an inch under stock.

The seats are very nice though I think I will find them very comfy.

Hey thanks for getting pics up so fast.  For head room measurements are checking from top of your actual head or just the top of the seat.  Did the position of the seat feel comfortable other than the loss of head room?  Keep us updated on what you end up doing for mounting these lower.

BTW that seat looks damn crisp in there!

Who / when is doing the review for these in an FC ?  I hate the slippery leather seats in my 87 GXL and would like to have a go to plan for when the time comes.  Unfortunately, I have blue interior so the black will look a bit odd - but it is way better than slipping around that way it was before I started the swap.

good question. We have had some interest from a few FC guys with no takers yet!

So let me publicly state that we want give an FC guy a crazy good deal on this seat, with a few stipulations:

1. have stock or lightly modified interior
2. willing to install before summer
3. take pictures and do a review

Any update on removing the sliders and hard-mounting the seats? I'm 6'2. I hacked the bejesus out of the factory foam to sit upright. Now I sit about an inch lower but I would LOVE some decent seats. If these seats, hard-mounted, sit where you think they will at about an inch lower than factory, I'm in.

Keep us updated!

Since I am considering doing the fit on my FC - I had a question for those of you familiar with seat selection for both the FC & FD.  Is the FC "easier" to fit both height & width?  Or is it about the same - meaning if they don't fit without sliders in the FD they won't fit in the FC on stock sliders either.

They are about the same.   I'm 6'2" and a stock seat with stock sliders hits my head on the sunroof car in FC or FD.

Don't use the corbeau brackets for an FC on the driver side at least, just bolt the seat to the stock slider with some brackets.

I'm 6'3 with a sparco seat on the stock slider.. My helmet just touches the headliner

I'm guessing no sunroof?    My current seats are LOW (my butt is 1.5" from the carpet) mounted to the floor, and if I pull the padding, my head hits the headliner.

Nope I have a sunroof. The seats I have (Sparco Speed/sprint) sit very low and the bottom cushion is thin. The brackets I used to mount he seat are just 1/8 flat steel across the stock slider and the seat bolts to them.

I have pulled my headliner and now my helmet hits part of the sunroof mounting bracket.. I need to pull the sunroof completely.

i dunno how you tall guys do it.
i have a non sunroof car, but im only 5'8" but my helmet skimmed the headliner.
and i have a momo seat mounted pretty low (yes im still running a slider, but the 'hammock' makes my butt pretty much touching the floor)

UPDATE:

We have an FB member stepping up to the plate on these seats so we should have good info on how they work out there.  We still have a need for an FC guy to review the Evolution, so if you have an FC with stock or close to stock interior and want to do everyone a favor and get a sweet deal on some seats PM me!

Update on the Seats in the FD.

Since installing the seats I have replaced the stock steering wheel with a momo also added the nrg tilt the short adapter and one spacer.

This and ditching my motor bike helmet for a car helmet has improved this immensely.

Though I would still like the seat a little lower in the back and a bit higher in the front.

To do this I have decided to take the sliders off the base, and filp the base then reinstall the sliders, hopefully with a little grinding in spots and cutting off and re-welding the bases front tabs I think I might get near an inch and a half AND still have sliders.

For those of you not keeping score at home this might get me 1/2 - to 1 inch under stock.

End of day round up:

It looks like it might work , I will have to swap the passenger base with the driver base ( DID NOT DO) because these mounts are just not quite symmetrical, I think they are out by a 1/4 inch but that is enough to make it not fit.

Lots of grinding and fiddling of the tracks to make it all fit, I even had to grind down 2 bolts heads so that they would clear each other.

In the end the first test sit, It seems perfect for me.

IT works!!

For me

THings I did to the bracket-

I ended up flipping the bracket over

bending the  front tabs 90 degrees so they were opposite

Drilling new seat mount holes right in-between the existing holes, I couldn't use the old holes the  trans hump was in the way

Grinding flat some of the welds

Things I did to the sliders.

cut some of the slider track that would interfere with the rear mounts of the bracket now that the rear mounts  go up.

I put a stack of about 6 washers between the bracket and the sliders to raise the front of the seat for comfort

Thats about it

It took hours of fiddling and fucking around and I think it earned me an inch and a bit of head room I can sit exactly where I would like to be, sans helmet
