S5 TII : Stub shaft part number to match KAAZ 1.5 #SBZ1310
« on: November 08, 2011, 06:19:57 AM »
I bought a KAAZ rear spool for my FC this week end and I'm not too sure if I use my own stub shaft , or change one side or replace both ot them.

Is there a way to find without having to remove the OEM spool from my car ?

Thanks

IIRC the housings on the S4 and S5 TIIs are the same,  the differing stub shafts were due to the configuration of the meatball.  I have both and S5 and S4 diff out in the shop somewhere.  Let me take a look to be sure.

If the housings are the same, I would use the S4 stub shafts, but you may want to call KAAZ to be sure.  I think mazdatrix carries KAAZ as well, and they'd probably know...

My guess is the 2nd stub shaft starting from left # 27-270B-P019 should be the one ( or 2 )  I need .
I'm not in a hurry but I was thinking it would be nice if I was able to buy them before I take the rear end apart so it won't stay in pieces for weeks.

I'll take better mesurements of the inside of the KAAZ and pisc. of my pumking so we may be able to figure out something.

So far since no one has the answer , I'll keep updating this thread so this information maybe usefull or someone else.

Spool has about 6" wide .

Where the axle fits in the spool, it's about 2.75" deep ( same on the other side ) .

Right side of the differential case .

Left .

I still don't have the answer but I will later on.

Still not sure if I bought the right stub shaft but I've received 2 of them today with new seals.

I've put them on the spool and this looks about right.

Next will be new bearings and after I'll be ready to take everything apart to swap the old Viscous spool for the KAAZ one.

Just used all stock components on my FD and Kaaz 1.5.  Make sure to use non synthetic oil in the rear when you swap fluids.   GM also sells some diff additive that works pretty nice.

I have a 89 Turbo II with the Viscous setup and according to what I've found online the stub axle from my car will not work so I've bought some from a 88 Turbo II so hopefully I'll be OK with those.

I have found some time to start working on my diffenrential Spool swap.

89 + Turbo II Viscous rear end stub shaft difference

I tried to remove the pinion but I guess I will need  press because it is stuck there.
I want to replace the bearing matter of fact I want to replace all bearings since I have the diff in my hands.

Anyone here has replaced a pinion bearing on a Turbo II that can guide me a bit ?

Thanks.  :)

Found a press to help me.

KOYO Japan Ball Bearing # DG4077 need 2 .

NSK Japan # HR30306C need 1

NSK Japan # HR32307C need 1

NSK Japan # R45Z-1 need 2

I'll call Mazda to check availability & prices but I will also check into a bearing place if by any chance they can get the same exact one for less .

Glad I didn't read this earlier when I was in a bad mood, I wouldn't have formulated the following informative response... That is a differential, not a spool, a spool is a solid piece the replaces a differential and does not allow any difference in wheel speed, it permanently locks them together, and takes its name from looking like an actual spool that thread comes on. They are only used in hardcore drag cars and certain types of off road trucks.

Not that I needed to pull the bearings from the LSD but to go shopping for replacement bearings ( if I don't buy OEM Mazda ) it can be usefull.

Also for general reference for anyone online who is working on a 86-91 Turbo II differential swap.
