My New Build - Not an RX7
« on: December 20, 2010, 10:06:21 AM »
As discussed in a previous post, I decided to switch to a Fox Body notchback to replace the FC. Plan was to buy a 4-banger car and build it, but lucked into this roller. It is a pretty nice '92 that had most everything I planned, including tubular k-member, A-arms, Flaming River rack, adjustable QA1 coilovers, camber/caster plates, built 8.8 with all the suspension pieces and Strange brakes, sub-frame connectors, MT Drag wheels,  275 DRs, parachute, 10-pt cage, a full compliment of gauges and a nice bolt-on fiberglass hood.

The car previously had a stock-block 4.6L with a turbo that the previous owner ran to 138+mph trap speeds. I am trying not to set any specific goals for the car except to get it down to 2,900lbs or less, making it 120+ lighter than the FC. On the night the FC crashed, it trapped 127.38mph at the 1/8-mile which should have been at least 160 1/4-mile trap. So, the notch will have plenty of power. How much of it I use depends on how comfortable I feel in the car. Like the FC, the car has no HVAC, but it will be driven any and everywhere.

Here are pics from the initial install

Decided to mount engine solid.. FC had OEM rubber mounts and the pass-side mount broke and I was shocked how much the engine moved. Lots of folks on LS1-tech say they felt little difference between poly mounts and solid and since I-6s are inherently smooth, it should not be that bad, but not really concerned.

Installed a 28x19 Northern dual-pass radiator with 16AN braided upper and standard lower hoses. It has what appears to be a massive cooler in the drivers-side tank with 1/2" NPT ports, so I used that for the oil cooler with 10AN push-loc hose. Turbo is a PTE-76GTS with a 3" turbine discharge that I modded by welding on a 4" mild-steel v-band flange so I could have a full 4" aluminum DP. DP was made from 11g aluminum tubing (.1225", twice the thickness of standard 16g tubing) and the rest of the exhaust will also be 4" aluminum with a Magnaflow muffler terminating just in front of rear. Working on that this week.

Here is all the "junk in the trunk". From the left is the SS alky tank and vent with a 360* loop, alky pump (full Alky-Control system), parachute release cable, 8-gal cell with rollover vent with 360* loop, 6AN return, 10AN hose feeding the Fuelab pump, 8AN cell drain, emergency shut-off, Optima battery and fuel pump wiring. Won't get too much groceries in there :D

Unsderside shot showing the DP outlet (amazing how it seems to dwarf the 3" I/C pipes) and the I/C plumbing. I/C is hidden but it is a 31x12x4. I was also able to reuse the OEM tranny x-member with some mods.

Best of all, early Christmas present from my better half. After 40yrs, I think she is a keeper :D

This is great. Can you guess at the weight once you're done?

Is there a reason that everyone goes with a notch? I have always liked the hatchbacks look a lot more. The notch never looked like a mustang to me. I have heard some people say its because the notch is stiffer, but if you are going to put a full cage in it I see there being a negligible difference at best.

Just wondering if I can build a race car and have it look good? I have owned two 5.0 hatch's over the years.

Notchbacks are usually cheaper in my experience, that may be related.

I thought it was because they were lighter than the hatchback.

Nice looking car.  Should move out.  I'm not much of a domestic guy, but I really like those Mustangs.

I thought it was because they were lighter than the hatchback.

Lighter AND stiffer.  Just a better basis for a drag car in general.  And obviously opinions vary, because I think a fox body notch looks far better than a hatchback.

Scottie, this is awesome.  Keep up the good work.

unless you own a turbo ls9 rx7 you do not know what the fuck you are talking about.
