Why L92 heads rock - 517 rwhp....stock LS2 block!
« on: December 19, 2010, 05:37:31 PM »
So I put this in my build thread -but feel this is worth of its own thread.  Finally got the full tune done on my car yesterday.  Background and parts:
Stock 12k mile LS2 block from TBSS.  Cylinder heads are stock,(untouched runners/chambers), L92 heads shaved down to 64cc's.  The L92 vs the LS3 heads - L92 has the bigger heavier valves,(not machined vs the LS3 valves).
Cam - custom spec by Patrick G - a "baby" cam by his words.  222/230 .597

This is the best ls2/l92 combo i've seen yet. Another one Patrick did a great work on was this http://www.ls1tech.com/forums/dynamometer-results-comparisons/1123842-ls2-l92-heads-makes-460rwhp-446rwtq.html but that doesn't even compare to this. Did you keep the TBSS throttle body or did you swap it out for gto/vette version? we need videos lol.

I love the torque curve.  You see so many curves that start at 4500.  For our car the 3250 - 6500 range is very usable.

wow! is the power in the heads/intake alone? that is impressive for a milled headed stock block. what the compression on the motor?

Ok, answers:  pump gas, Dyno is an eddy current dyno - proven in the past to be pretty accurate,(religious maintenance, calibrations, resetting baro/temp/etc. for every run among other things).
The throttle body is a LS2 electronic one - GTO/Corvette style.  Intake is the Samberg radiator setup.
Where is the power?  I think two things - one, shaved heads giving about 11.4:1 compression ratio,(vs about 10.4:1 on unmilled L92's), and the camshaft being spec'd properly for my build.  The intake - basically a stock LS3 intake, in front of the throttle body - very similar to a Camaro setup - a straight shot.
Honestly - initially we thought something was wrong in the settings for the dyno,(you set the weight/etc..) - it was set for a camaro,(3400 lbs), and when it was reset to 2800lbs, it hardly changed at all.  The best non milled/shaved L92 w/LS2 motor he had done before was about 475rwhp.  So my extra nearly point of compression, the very straight shot intake and a good exhaust setup are likely the difference.  I expected lower than a camaro setup because of a solid axle vs independent rear suspension - bottom line, its one beast of a motor.  Took it out for a drive this afternoon with my dad - no traction in 1-3rd, and it starts getting squirmy in 4th....
 515 rwhp, 2800lbs - about 5.5 lbs/hp.  If you go by flywheel hp,(1.15 correction factor) about 590-600, 4.7 lbs/hp
To put it in perspective - new ZR1: 5.25lb/hp with flywheel of 638 and weight of 3350.
Mclaren F1: 627hp, 2950lb - 4.7lb/hp,(same as mine)
If you've ever watched videos of the McLaren F1 on the track - and the absolutely brutal accel/spinning/etc.., that is very much what my car is like right now.

Damn man you have the setup,do you mind disclosing how much you have in the motor? Not counting intake and headers, speaking of headers thats through mids.

I am planning on running LS3 heads and a FAST 102 on my LS2. How did you cut out the center bars on the LS3 manifold? This makes me happy, I have been hoping for around 475whp.

not to discount the build at all but have you guys noticed how some motors just make more power given similar states of tune?
That sounds wicked man, glad to see some hard work and money pay off for a change!!!!!

Nice man.  You need to let me know when you're around Little Rock/Maumelle and take me for a ride.

The L92's come on what engine normally?  The 6 Liter truck engines?
