1993 RX-7 Rear Brake Lights Not Working
« on: October 10, 2010, 08:09:27 PM »
Question Regarding a 1993 RX-7.  All the lights turn on just fine on my car.  But when I apply the brakes the rear brake lights do not come on.  I noticed that this has just started to happen about a few days ago.

Attached Fuse Box image is from my car.  Which Fuse controls the rear brake lights?  1993 Mazda RX-7 Fuse Box

It is the 20 AMP fuse on the upper left.

Greg / Richard,

Thank You.  The problem cannot be anything else other than a fuse.  Correct?  It's difficult to get under and up there to remove that fuse.

It could be the brake pedal switch gone bad or possibly a bad connection to it. I'd check that after checking the fuse..

Circuit goes, fuse, pedal, lights.  Pretty simple.  Check for voltage at the fuse, at the pedal, at the pedal with it pressed, and at the lights.  You should be able to find where the signal is broken.

That's what I did Greg,  I pressed the brake pedal and I dont see the brake lights come on.

Here is what I want to attempt - Stop me if I should not do this.  In the attached image I will temporarily take the Functional B (Wiper) remove it and install it in A.  Just to see if it works.

By the way, is there a fuse removing device.  Cant get my fingers around the fuse.

There is a fuse removing device on the inside of your fuse box lid.  If not, just use some needle nose plyers.

I don't mean press the pedal and look for lights, I mean check the circuit in different places through out the circuit for 12v with the pedal on and off. The pedal itself should be getting a constant 12v, key on or off.

There was never a fuse box lid so I could'nt find the fuse removing device.  The entire fuse box is in such an awkward location that it's hard to get under and up there.  I tried removing it with my fingers but no go.  I'm going to have to get a device from a local WalMart.

Doesn't the TNS relay also control the tails?

BTW, a pair of needle nose pliers is the best thing I've ever seen to remove those fuses.    I have little agile fingers and they're still a PITA to get at.

TNS controls tails, not brakes.

TNS= Tail, Numbers (license) & Side, so basically, running lights and interior illumination (gauges and switches).
Now, if I only knew what BTN stood for...
