Atlantic canada 91 rx7 build (old school sbc)
« on: March 20, 2013, 07:45:46 PM »
hi all

i figured i would start a build thread on my car, this will be a slower build but will get done sooner then later.

so my car is a 91 rx7 has power sunroof and power windows and locks, small brakes and a glx posi rear end. has blue interior and the body is in black primer.

this car has been a sbc car for like 10 years now thru other owners, in which some had neglected it and some didnt.
i got the car from a friend for 500 as a roller, when he got it , it had a stock 350 with 700r4 , and he ran it that way for a year then blew the motor. so he then got a 350 crate motor and a t5 trans for it. blew the trans twice and broke a couple stubs shafts then the car sat for 2 years and now i have it. so that's the history on the car.

My plans:
355 sbc with hypertetic pistons, balanced rods and forged crank, new cam, lifters, timing set. has vortec heads that have been ported and polished and 2.02 1.60 valves put into them, dual plane intake and 750cfm holley carb. went 11.19 in a mustang chassis but was told its in the 400hp range  i dunno tho.

using a th350 trans with a 3500 tci stall.

putting weld prostars on it.
15x4 up front
15x8 out back

this is gunna be a street legal drag car i will call it, not to many comforts to it. things may change tho.

things i have done so far are baught the car haha , and tweeked the motor mounts, and pulled the dash and carpet and started removing the sound deading off the floor. i plan to put the dash back in it , but may not put the carpet back in yet not sure yet tho.

i have some questions starting out that some people may be able to answer.

why did mazda put so much damn foam under the floor?
also since this car is gunna be a carbed sbc, does the factory mazda ecu run any funtions on the car now or can i remove it from the car?

any feedback or comments are appreciated.

also wanted to add that all you people in the states are very lucky to have so many cars and parts around for sale.

i live in charlottetown prince edward island canada, and around here there are basicly no parts cars or parts for these cars. as far as i know mine is the only v8 rx7 in my province and there are 3 or 4 that i know of in atlantic canada that are v8 swapped.  kinda rare around here.

here are some pics of what i started with

custom guage cluster by previous owner.

a homemade scoop i am going to mold onto the factory hood at somepoint.

does anyone recognize these engine mounts i believe they are a old kit from someone.

well its been a while since i posted , but the car has come a long way since the first pics. i have gotten it together and running and even raced it a few times , got a best of 11.55 @ 117 with a 1.59 60ft

custom trans mount

i also installed my new drag race front coil overs that i got from 1320king. they seem to have helped my 60ft times i think. i will post pics of them also

Those are the closest thing to engine plate as you can get without getting one.

they are pretty rugged mounts for sure, but they do the trick. may change them down the road if i decide to go with more power.

i need a coolant filler neck too haha, oh well might get it new since they are only 60 bucks thru summit. but gotta get my new rad next, so i can lighten the front end up and make bleeding the system a lot easier.

I personally love my becool aluminum rad. Nice light and works pretty good when it gets to +40 with the humidity in Winnipeg.

well i now have a baseline for weight on the car, so not i can attempt to lighten it up.

i borrowed a friends vehicle weight scales today and weighed my rx7.

it weighed in at 2718 pounds.

LF: 798    RF: 741

LR: 589    RR: 590

so it turned out lighter then i expected, but id like to loose a bit more front end weight.

alluminum rad, alluminum water pump, and weld racing skinnies will be a good start.

does anyone know how heavy the front bumper support is on these cars?

That's pretty light for a V8 FC with iron heads. From the pics looks like you already have a aluminum WP .
I had mine weighed at SNS 2850lbs. This was with no weight reduction, but I'm running aluminum heads,WP,hood, drive shaft, and a G-force T-5.

my water pump is a iron one just painted silver. my motor is all iron . i have no heater box and all the ducts are gone from behind the dash, all the sound deadening and foam is gone from the carpet. that's it ,but hoping to shed an other hundred off it so when i cage it , its about the same.

id love to have a alluminum or fiberglass hood.

Is that a non-roller cam block that you are running vortec heads on?

yes its a 98 non roller block. the heads have been ported and polished a little and have had 2.02 valves installed. but i cant run over a .500 lift cam , cause the valve seats havent been cut down yet to run bigger springs.

The stock bumper is pretty light. It is composite with a couple steel brackets. I went to a chromoly tube bumper and only saved a few lbs.
