S2000 ABS swap thread
« on: July 04, 2010, 02:49:39 PM »
I figured it would be better to start a new thread instead of taking over LPI's thread completely.

We also switched ABS from the factory Mazda to a 2001 Honda S2000 ABS system.  It's an 8 year new design and is much quicker.  Seems to be working.  First day on the track will be next wednesday.  It's a fully contained system which is very nice.

Bill

It's a 3 channel sort of.  It a very different system than the RX7's.  It uses one front and one rear in a cross as a channel.  It has four distinct pump channels for the wheels, but I believe the rears work as one.

I haven't found a true four channel that works as a transplant, other than the Bosch M4 full race system that will set you back 10k.  Their is probably one out there I just don't know of it.  I raced the s2000 for years and the ABS was simply perfect.  It was nice that the ecu and pump are one unit and self contained in a package about half the size of the RX7's pump only.  It's only external inputs are the brake pedal and four wheel sensors.  It has two outputs that are needed for diagnostics and that's it.  The pumps are easy to find, the mating wiring connector not so much.

I still need to try it on the track though.  It's definitely working, but I don't know how well yet.

Bill

The electrical connector seems to be a bit harder to source. i got a few offers for plugs from S2ki members, but they want to sell the whole harness it is apart of. i got one offer for 63 shipped.
Here is the AMP / Tyco PDF with the part numbers for the connector, cover, pins etc that you need:
http://www.tycoelectronics.com/commerce/DocumentDelivery/DDEController?Action=showdoc&DocId=Specification+Or+Standard%7F108-5523-3%7FB%7Fpdf%7FJapanese%7FJPN_SS_108-5523-3_B.pdf

Here's the page for the connector part of the plug (25 position), 316874
http://www.tycoelectronics.com/catalog/pn/en/316874-2?RQPN=316874-2

There are some japanese/chinese websites offering them for sale.. dunno if somebody can buy a small quantity ?
I have three of the ABS modules now and one plug/tail.. so a couple of the pump/ecus for sale in the UK if anyone wants one!

Apparently in stock here, 160 minimum quantity, but maybe only a few dollars each.

I got my unit for 55 shipped off ebay. here is an ebay listing(one of many) for a abs unit

lets continue this and see how far we can get with this. it would be a much cheaper alternative to the S8 abs(around 400).

I've scoped out the signals and the stock FD abs sensors have a voltage offset of about 1VDC compared to the S2k sensors.  I've make some brackets for the front and rear and will be testing with the s2k sensors in a few weeks.

It does work with the stock FD sensors, but it's not 100%.  It seems to be a bit premature on turning on, but it does cycle and keep you from locking up.

Does it have to be a <2003 pump? I know they made changes for 2004 and it's listed as a 4 channel system on the 2007 cars. Anyone know if these later changes affect the portability to other cars?

Honestly not sure, but I'm 99% sure the ABS modules are the same until 2006.  2006 on are different.

if you end up having to run s2k sensors, could this setup be adapted into an fc?

I wish it could be adopted to an FC. It would help greatly

why couldn't it? it's a stand alone system right? or does it have to tie into the fd's original system?

Well, just ordered up a <2003 module, plug and 4 wheel sensors. Looks like I have my winter project sorted!

OK, just downloaded the S2000 workshop manual and found the ABS schematics.

First thoughts:

I think this is a true 4 channel system. There are 4 separate solenoid controls within the unit, one for each wheel and 4 brake lines running out from the unit, again, one for each wheel.
The "cross channel" setup referred to by Bill above is the usual dual circuit setup. Each of the two separate circuits in the brake master cylinder apply pressure to one front wheel and its diagonally opposite rear wheel.
The rear lines run through a single PCV (Proportioning Control Valve) before they reach the rear wheels. I think I need to check out the S2000 PCV to make sure it's a dual circuit one. Hopefully it keeps each brake line separate as it runs through the body of the valve.

From memory the FD PCV has a single input and two outputs so it'll either need a second FD PCV (with one output on each PCV blocked) fitting to maintain the FD brake balance or we'll need to figure out some way of fitting the S2000 PCV and altering the balance to suit the FD.

Someone please let me know if I'm talking bollocks.

sounds right to me. may i ask how much all of that ran you? (abs unit, plug, wheel sensors)

?140 delivered. That's over here in the uk though. I was lucky enough to find an S2000 specific breaker on eBay.

so, roughly $212. not bad. i may have to try this out next year to see if it will work in an fc.

I can't (yet) see any reason why it wouldn't.

does an FC have trigger wheels on/in the hub? the sensors need trigger wheels

How fast does the stock ABS activate in an FD, compared to other cars?
