PLEASE HELP :(
« on: July 27, 2012, 04:08:07 PM »
So i will keep the story short and to the point.... I MESSED UP!! I was trying to eliminate some wiring (powersteering, a/c, abs) and in doing so i got over confident and cut happy and now iam in desperate need of help.!  its a 87 fc rx7 btw. Turbo model, had p/s and abs and i am removing both.

"EDIT!" - This is what i did to the car:

-I cut the big harness that runs from inside of the car to the front of the car on the drivers side. I cut it right around where the steering linkage is  ..Ill post pics....
- I weeded out all the wires that i dont need and have use for out of the cut portion that went to the front of the car but now i need to weed out the matching wires on the firewall/interior side
- The problem i am having is a LOT of wires are matching in color, size, etc...
- I labeled and seperated  the left and right turn signals, headlights, and retractors in the front of the harness already. I havnt counted but i think its like 10-15 wires BUT now i have like 50 wires on the interior side to take out.

questions:
- Where do i start  :(
1. does anybody have some pictures or anything better then a wiring diagram.
2. does anybody have a link to a realy nice wiring diagram (iam horrible with wiring :<(   )
3. there is a big yellow connector that was next to the abs connector...... can i get rid of it?
4. ANY HELP WOULD BE AMAZING!!

i already looked at the wire tuck thread and i have used all of it to elimate some wiring but iam stuck now because i cut the huge bulk in half instead of tracing them back then cutting as needed.

What do you mean better than the wiring diagrams?    There isn't any more information to be had really.

This is an...    FD?

I think you need to spend some time and get good with the wiring diagrams;   there is no good way to lead you through resolving this kind of issue over the internet without spending a LOT of time.

To me the stock fc wiring diagrams flat out suck. They are just arranged in a way that is hard for me to follow and don't flow well. But that being said they are all there is and you will have to wade in and study them.

agreed, the stock wiring diagrams are hard to follow until you get a hang of them. the recent GM wiring diagrams are super easy to follow by comparison.

just stare at the diagrams for a couple hours and you'll figure it out
$800 88 gtu, $300 lm7

I went a step further and just pulled it all out.. haha Going to just rewire the few things I want to keep.
Since you said just running headlights and stuff up front I am assuming you are using a carbed engine?

Florescent yellow?  That is for the computer, you don't need it.

well i started taking wires out of it and the harness and got nervous because i traced like i think 2 or 3 back to the plugs at the cluster / steering wheel area (sorry its taken apart so not sure 100% what it belongs too) Iam going to start taking pics and hopefully you guys have some patience for me  :( .

Digital you have answered tons of questions of mine before and i THANK YOU so much for all your help man! is there any way you can lead me in the right direction for tracing the wires for the headlights back?

Glad to help.     FWIW, I do not use the Mazda factory wiring for gauges on swaps.   I run new leads right to the plugs at the back of the cluster.   I don't trust Mazda's wiring for anything, so I run the engine, gauges and controls fully separate when I do swaps.

As far as the headlights, boy that's a tough one.    What exactly does/does not work?   Do the retractors work?  Do the brights work?  Turn signals?

as far as the cluster goes how do you wire it up for the gauges? through fuses or something? Iam a complete noob when it comes to wiring. You ask me to read a compressor map or build you a turbo kit iam your man but wiring ....

and as far as headlights i have all the stuff from the headlights, retractors, turns traced from the front to the firewall butttt its cut between the firewall and the body and now i have like 10-12 wires on the front side and like 50 wires to weed out on the interior side :(

You don't need fuses between the gauges and sensors, they are just sensors, not battery voltage.   :)    I basically splice them into the factory plugs that the gauge cluster plugs into, for lack of a better phrasing.   I leave the stock wires for turn signals, gauge power, brights, etc, and just cut the ones that went to the sensors and replace them with new wires that go directly to the sensor (that I can integrate nicely into the engine harness so that it looks pretty).  ;)

And, um, ouch.  That's a mess.   I really can't fix that over the internet.   :(    You need to learn the factory wiring diagrams and get handy with using a multimeter to tone out wires.    A cheap one from Wal-mart or the local hardware store can do all you need and they are like 10 dollars.   :)

i wouldnt know where to even begin with a volt meter.... i was thinking,

1.hooking up and seting up the battery stuff first.
2. Get the car to where i can power the wires.
3. Play with the controls and track down what wire its messing around with.... rinse and repeat.

could be wrong, could be right  :'(  .....

I honestly cant believe i did it. pretty much was zoning out into my ipod, had a big set of cutters and took 2 wacks at it and FWALLLLAAAA screwed my self  >:(

I wouldn't do that....
You should be able to figure it out with the wiring diagram and a multi meter. Select a wire you want to verify on a plug, ground said wire to the body, put multimeter on diode checker, one lead on the wire center conductor and the other to a ground. If it beeps its the wire you grounded. Checking resistance also works, I just like diode checker because you don't have to be looking at the meter to see if its the right one.

If none of that made any sense it might be easier to just get a new(er) harness off the 7 club or something and swap them. Especially if you are trying to keep the stock switches for turn signals, headlights and all that.. I don't give a shit about those so I am just using my own switches in a panel for the few things I need wired up.
