FC A/C PLUMBING thread
« on: July 10, 2012, 10:05:30 PM »
I'm working on putting A/C into my RX-7 right now and trying to work out the plumbing side of things.  Since the electronic side of the system seems easily hooked up with a PEZ harness I will not get into detail of that here.

Here is a little diagram I grabbed from the internet and then manipulated heavily:

This is representing (basically) how I am going to set my system up.

Everything on the passenger compartment side of the firewall will be used as as.  Starting at the firewall there will be various fittings and hoses required to connect the stock RX-7 stuff with the LS1 stuff.

So far I have this:

Low Side Connection (A & B)

7/8-14 threads
-10 size
O-ring fitting

A) Existing large line coming out of firewall
Male fitting

B) Connection to large line coming out of firewall
Female fitting
Aeroquip E-Z Clip fitting FJ3054-1010S (includes R134a low side port)

High Side Connection (C & D)

This is what my 1990 (actually late '89) TII RX-7 has coming out of the firewall.  This fitting seems quite hard to come by.  I may have to end up making a custom piece for this if I can't find one?

9/16-18 threads  (this is considered an M14 Metric fitting, even though it has SAE threads)
-5 size
O-ring fitting

C) Existing small line coming out of firewall
Male fitting

D) Connection to small line coming out of firewall
Female fitting
????

ALTERNATE High Side Connection (C & D)

This is what my dad's 1990 convertible RX-7 has coming out of the firewall.  This is a much more common fitting size and readily available.

5/8-18 threads
-6 size
O-ring fitting

C) Existing small line coming out of firewall
Male fitting

D) Connection to small line coming out of firewall
Female fitting
Aeroquip E-Z Clip fitting FJ3053-0606S (includes R134a high side port)
http://aeroquip.cc/fj3053-0606sfemaleo-ringstraightfittingshortpilotwithr134ahighsideport.aspx

Condenser

Universal, fit to radiator size
(mine will be to match the JTR radiator setup)
Parallel flow
Fittings on same side
-8 O-ring inlet port
-6 O-ring outlet port

Receiver/Dryer

Universal with sight glass
-6 O-ring inlet and outlet ports
(have not tracked down yet)

The other day I tracked down some nifty A/C fittings and hose made by Aeroquip that only require a special pair of pliers to assemble.  With these parts you could make your own soft lines at home to complete your plumbing system.  I am not sure if I want to go this way or also use hard lines in the engine bay.  I want whatever I end up with to be as neat and factory looking as possible, and obviously it has to work too!
